Our Coffee Date at Janson Coffee Shop and Farm
After a good walk in the morning down the main street of town, Vic and I went on a coffee date right here in Volcan to Jansen Coffee Shop and Farm. It’s a 7-minute drive from our house, but the private gravel road is rough, and it took another 5 minutes to drive just it. It is worth it! We took in the beautiful scenery that included crops, cattle, horses, rolling hills, and mountains. The views were stunning from the top of the vast property with flower-filled gardens where you can sit to drink a smooth and flavorful cup of Jansen coffee. The atmosphere is so tranquil. We felt like we stepped into another world far, far away. It was a mini vacation without the tiring and long travel.
After ordering our coffee and empanadas, we were given a buzzer to let us know when our coffee was ready. The gardens and the views drew us out to explore around each corner. We also enjoyed looking through a small gift shop where they also sold vegetables from their hydroponic farm. We watched another customer come in and buy nearly every vegetable they had on their shelves. We had seen the hydroponic farm on our way in and wondered if we would be able to buy vegetables, too. The buzzer alerted us to pick up our order and we sat to take it all in. The coffee did not disappoint. The flavor is full, smooth, and not bitter at all.
Before leaving, Vic asked about buying vegetables and was told we could go directly to the farm office. Descending the hill, we headed directly to the facility where we met Robi. A wonderful young man who spoke some English that was much better than our broken Spanish. He took our order and radioed to have it brought to the office. They limit access inside the farm to prevent insects from entering. As we waited we discovered Robi had learned English in school and has continued to practice with Duolingo. He has traveled to Colombia and Costa Rica and was excited to tell us about his upcoming trip to Mexico. Our order arrived, and it was a grand total of $5.10. They only accept cash at this office. We thanked our new friend and tasted the little tomatoes as soon as we got into the car… wow, what flavor!
They do four different tours of the coffee farm, processing, roasting, and tasting ranging from $15 to $40. Check out Janson Coffee Shop and Coffee Tours. We will return!
